"I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird."- Paul McCartney
If you call a person weird, then it is acutally you who is the weird one. Everyone has their weird, quirky sides so we should all be tolerant of each other.
Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too. Voltaire, Essay on Tolerance
The quote expresses the importance of individuality and the over all tolerance of individualism. Voltaire discusses that every person should be allowed live their own life without the judgment of others. Therefore, tolerance is key to the acceptance of others.
"When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others."
In order to have tolerance with others that have promblems you need to over your own. This reminds me of a more popular quote of "you can't love someone withour loving yourself first." Both quotes are trying to get the point across that you need to start by making a change in yourself before you can act upon it.
“Human diversity makes tolerance more than a virtue; it makes it a requirement for survival.” – Rene Dubos
This quote is saying that because everyone in the world is different, tolerance is not only good to have, is vital for survival. If you cannot tolerate others you cannot live happily or exist with others.
"What is tolerance? -- it is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other's folly -- that is the first law of nature." - Voltaire
Voltaire is saying how we are all made diffferent and we should all just learn to accept each other's differences because that's what makes us who we are.
"The only way to make sure people you agree with can speak is to support the rights of people you don't agree with".- Eleanor Holmes Norton
This is a great quote that Eleanor spoke about tolerance. She is saying that you have to accept what people say even if you dont agree with it. Then you can speak to the people you actually agree with.
"tolerance is not just agreeing with one another or remaining indifferent in the face of injustice, but rather showing respect for the essential humanity in every person."- William Ury
Ury is stating that tolerance is not just agreeing and faking it. Tolerance is truly excepting an issue and also showing the issue respect.
“I will not condemn you for what you did yesterday, if you do it right today.”- Sheldon S. Maye
This quote is related to tolerance because it is saying that if you fix your mistake then it can be let go and the person it went against will be able to move on and so will the offender.
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. -Evelyn Beatrice Hall (James E)
I like this quote because it is so dramatic. It is saying that we all have a right to speak and we should be tolerant of what people say because it is their right. (James E)
I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird.-Paul McCartney
This quote by Paul McCartney states that everyone is different and have different ways in which they choose to live their lives.Questioning the beliefs of others will not accomplish anything. All humans are different and these difference must be recognized and tolerated by everyone.
"The capacity for getting along with our neighbor depends to a large extent on the capacity for getting along with ourselves. The self-respecting individual will try to be as tolerant of his neighbor's shortcomings as he is of his own." - Eric Hoffer
This quote is saying that tolerance comes from having respect for yourself first before anything else. If you have respect for yourself then you will be able to accept other people for their flaws because you can accept your own flaws. Tolerance's roots comes from love for yourself. It is impossible to love others if you do not love yourself.
There is no love without forgiveness, and there is no forgiveness without love.
Bryant H. McGill
You have to be able to love and respect others, if you can’t then you will never be able to accept others and their faults.
“There is nothing in the genius of America more precious today than the spirit of religious and political tolerance in its application to our own people.”
-Paul Harris
This quote is saying that having tolerance in American is a very smart thing because it gives our own people the right to worship any God the people chose and the right to elect and person they chose to run the country.
"Laws alone can not secure freedom of expression; in order that every man present his views without penalty there must be spirit of tolerance in the entire population." - Albert Einstein
Only when all people are willing to tolerate other people's opinions, without the threat of violence or conflict, will there truly be freedom of expression.
"Anger and intolerance are the twin enemies of correct understanding." - Mohandas K. 'Mahatma' Gandhi
Ghandi is exressing his view that one cannot achieve a true, objective view of a situation or conflict without removing anger-driven prejudice from our minds and seeking to understand the other person's point of view. In my opinion this quote could also have a more subtle meaning; with this quote, Ghandi acknowledges that one who is intollerant is generally afraid that their seemingly pure way of thought might be tainted by the introduction of outside views. Thus he asserts that each individual might only find a system of beliefs that fits his or her conscience through exposing his or herself to other beliefs. After all, if your view is "correct," you should be able to discern in your mind why the opposing view is wrong, but you must first seek to understand the opposing view before you can strengthen your own.
" In the practice of tolerance, one's enemy is the best teacher."-Dalai Lama
- I think that the Dalai Lama is saying that of course it's easy to be tolerant towards those you love, but a true test of tolerance comes when you must be able to withstand a person who you can not stand. He is saying that being able to tolerate a person who may annoy the heck out of you is the best practice towards learning and being able to tolerate anyone and anything that may come your way.
"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal." - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
This quote shows tolerance because Martin Luther King Jr. and all of his followers have waited and (at at this time) are waiting for equality between blacks and whites, which takes a lot of tolerance because they have to wait until the nation will change their views of the African Americans.
“You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.”
~Friedrich Nietzsche This quote shows that there are many ways to approach a situation, or to solve a problem.By working together and showing tolerance towards each other, we are better able to understand all plausible solutions to a problem.
“Tolerance is the virtue of the man without convictions.” - G. K. Chesterton
- This quote shows that, although tolerance is a virtue that we would all desire, it not attainable by those who have previous understandings, or convictions. Those who have previous understandings would look at differences and be confused at the difference, and then would not tolerate the difference.
“Highest result in education is tolerance” –Helen Keller
- This quote about tolerance shows that in order to achieve a greater education that one has to be tolerant, and take what is being thrown at them. In which, when trying to be the best there is a lot that is being asked of a person and they have to be tolerant with what is being asked of them. Therefore, this quote shows that people have to tolerant of what is being asked of them in order to be better than others.
